The Green Stem Project is a Youth Development Programme by Mohau Cares Social Welfare Trust, designed to equip school-going learners with practical life skills, entrepreneurial knowledge, financial literacy, and personal development support.
The Green Stem Project draws its name from the Sepedi proverb:
“Lehlaka le kobja le sa le talana”
A stem is bent while it is still green.
This proverb emphasises the importance of shaping children early, while their values, character, and life direction are still forming. In line with this philosophy, the programme prioritises early intervention—guiding learners at a young age to develop the right mindset, skills, morals, and work ethic that will influence their future success.
Through practical activities, learners participate in the development of school-based enterprises. While entrepreneurship is encouraged, not all learners are expected to become entrepreneurs. Learners who do not identify as entrepreneurs are assigned functional and supportive roles such as administration, operations, marketing, record-keeping, and teamwork coordination. This ensures inclusivity and exposes all participants to real workplace functions, collaboration, and responsibility.
To ensure sustainability, scalability, and meaningful impact, the programme requires sponsorships and funding to cover costs related to: Programme delivery, Learning materials, Facilitation and coordination, Transport and logistics.
The Green Stem Project is implemented in partnership with various stakeholders. Psychologists support the psychosocial and personal development components, finance experts provide financial literacy, and corporate institutions provide entrepreneurial mentorship and support, while funders provide resources to enable us to carry out the programme.
